Wood wine rack plans with Katie and Sondra.

Katie and Sondra like their wine. After a day of making wood crafts and projects in their wood shop, they like to open a bottle of Pinot Noir and sit on their patio to enjoy the evening. What more could they ask for but to build and display their own wall mounted wine rack.

So, the next day came around and they started out designing their very own wood wine rack plans. They decided on a rack that is big enough for two bottles of wine and two wine glasses.

The Small Wood Wine Rack Plans

The first step is to make a shopping list of the materials to complete this project.

  1. 1 board – 1”x4” x 6 feet long
  2. 1 board – 1”x2” x 6 feet long
  3. 1 bag of 25 – 1-1/4” wood screws
  4. 10-15 finishing nails – 1” long
  5. Wood glue

The cut list:

A – Sides – 2 pieces,  1”x4”x14”

B – Top Support – 1 piece,  1”x4”x9.5”

C – Bottom Support – 1 piece, 1”x4”x8”

D – Wine Glass Rack – 1 piece, 1”x4”x9.5”

E – Braces, 4 pieces, 1”x2”x9.5”

The first step of this project, Sondra builds the sides for this small wine rack. She marks the cuts on the 1×4 board and cuts the job with a hand saw or band saw. In addition, she sands the edges smooth removes any residue with a damp cloth.

Next, Sondra measures and cuts the support boards from the cut list above. The top support is the 1×2 by 9-1/2” long and the bottom support is 1×4 by 8” long. She sands the edges smooth and hands the boards over to Katie.

After this is done, Katie assembles the frame by attaching the supports to the side. First, she drills pilot holes for the 1x2x9 top support and attaches it with 1-1/4” woodscrews with glue. The second step she drills pilot holes for the bottom 1x4x8 support and attaches it to the sides with glue and 1-1/4” woodscrews. In addition, this bottom support is place 3/4” from the bottom. Katie uses a carpenter’s square to make sure all the corners are straight and square before inserting screws.

The wine glass support is cut from 1×4 lumber at 9-1/2” long. Sondra measures and cuts out the slots for the wine glass stems and then sands the piece smooth.

The last build step is cutting the four rails from 1×2 board at 9-1/2” long. Katie attaches these 1×2 strips to the front of the wine shelf by predrilling holes for 1” finishing nails. She also spaces the strips apart by 3/4”.

The final step for Katie and Sondra is applying a coat of spar urethane to add protection to the wine rack.
